Roughpoint Forest Ranger Ormond wanted to help the hikers identify their rock. Her plan is to figure out if the rock is kimberlite by using her knowledge of how rocks are formed. In this activity you will gather information on rock formation to help Ranger Ormond identify the hiker’s rock. Challenge Question: How are rocks formed?

Challenge Question (copy+answer in lab book) How are rocks formed? Write Sedimentary, Igneous, Metamorphic, and Fossils in your lab book. Get textbook and begin reading on page B34. Take notes on these while you are reading. Be prepared to answer questions about these topics.

B19 Vocabulary: Rock Properties
Rock Type Characteristics Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic Formed by cooling magma. Surface can be smooth OR covered with large crystals. Formed by tiny rocks like sand cemented together in layers. It can be light weight and crumbly where you feel individual particles. It may have fossils. Formed by heat and/or high pressure inside the earth. May see bands of color and tiny crystals.
