Water Water is a familiar substance in all 3 physical states: solid, liquid, and gas. Water is the most abundant liquid on Earth. Water is frequently a reactant or product in such reactions.

Water Structure Water molecules consist of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen united by polar-covalent bonds. The molecules in solid or liquid water are linked by hydrogen bonding.

Physical Properties of Water
At room temperature, water is transparent, odorless, tasteless, and almost colorless. Water freezes and ice melts at 0 degrees Celsius. In lower density, ice floats in water. With higher density, it sinks.

Questions Why is a water molecule polar?
A water molecule because of its shape, is a polar molecule, it is because on side has a positive charge and the other has a negative charge. 2. Why is ice less dense than liquid water? It is because due to the way hydrogen bonds are oriented as it freezes, the water molecules are pushed farther apart compared to liquid water.

What you'll need: A glass filled right to the top with water A piece of cardboard Instructions: Put the cardboard over the mouth of the glass, making sure that no air bubbles enter the glass as you hold onto the cardboard. Turn the glass upside down (over a sink or outside until you get good). Take away your hand holding the cardboard. What's happening? If all goes to plan then the cardboard and water should stay put. Even though the cup of water is upside down the water stays in place, defying gravity! So why is this happening? With no air inside the glass, the air pressure from outside the glass is greater than the pressure of the water inside the glass. The extra air pressure manages to hold the cardboard in place, keeping you dry and your water where it should be, inside the glass.
