Steps to Success – The Highland Literacy Progression
March 2015 Redraft Why? Steps to Success – The Highland Literacy Progression Version 1 was released in February The progression pathway was created to support schools and practitioners in delivering the Experiences and Outcomes (Es and Os), through developing progression within and through the Curriculum for Excellence Levels. What’s changed? . . . Since Version 1 of the framework was published, we have seen the release of the Significant Aspects of Learning and the Suite of Resources from Education Scotland under the Assessing Progress and Achievement work stream. The Highland Literacy Working Group have now ensured that the progression framework is in line with the Significant Aspects of Learning and includes reference to the most up to date guidance from Education Scotland. Why?

March 2015 Redraft How do I use The Highland Literacy Progression? Pg.1 acknowledges the wealth of work that went into the original and redrafted versions of the progression framework. The progression is based on the work of ASGs, (such as Millburn, the IRA and Tain who have developed Literacy progressions) the quality assurance from the Authority’s representative body – The Highland Literacy Working Group, and the work of Education Scotland including the Es and Os, the Principles and Practice paper and the Significant Aspects of Learning. Pg.1 also provides examples of a text, in its holistic sense, as defined by Education Scotland within the Principles and Practice paper. How do I use The Highland Literacy Progression?

March 2015 Redraft How do I use the Primary Progression Pathway? Pg.2 outlines the purposes and aims of the progression framework. “The purpose of this document is to offer a continuum of learning through to the end of Broad General Education (CfE Early – Third/Fourth Levels). The progression is intended to assist teachers as they plan their literacy curriculum and assess evidence of learning.” “The aims of the Progression are to: enhance planning and assessment, using skills, knowledge and understanding to scaffold success criteria within lessons provide staff with a framework to promote progression in learning and teaching enable Sharing Standards within schools and across ASGs.” How do I use The Highland Literacy Progression?

March 2015 Redraft How do I use the Primary Progression Pathway? Pg.3 provides an overview of how the framework can support practitioners. To support our medium/long term planning and assessment of Literacy Experiences we can firstly engage with the Significant Aspects of Learning. They are a summation of the Experiences and Outcomes. For Literacy and English these are the three organisers: Listening and Talking Reading Writing There are seven Sub-SALs which feed into the Significant Aspects of Learning: 1.engage with and create a broad range of texts, including Scottish and Scots texts 2.use reading and listening strategies to understand, analyse and evaluate texts 3.find and use information 4.develop critical literacy skills, including evaluating sources 5.write with increasing accuracy, making effective use of spelling, grammar and punctuation 6.create texts of increasing complexity using more sophisticated language 7.develop and use higher‐order thinking skills.* * SCL7 is an overaching Sub-SAL which will permeate through the Experiences and Outcomes Steps to Success – The Highland Literacy Progression is the layer which sits underneath this. This shows progression against the Experiences Outcomes, within and through the Curriculum for Excellence Levels. How do I use The Highland Literacy Progression?

March 2015 Redraft How do I use the Primary Progression Pathway? Pg.4, Pg.13 and Pg.23 include the milestones/ learning statements from the Education Scotland Literacy Progression Framework for each of the Significant Aspects of Learning. Pg.4 – Listening and Talking Pg.13 – Reading Pg.23 – Writing These statements suggest the absolute learning for each of the CfE Levels – Early-Fourth – within the Broad General Education. To the left hand side of the table you will find the Sub-SALs (SS) which are pertinent to the Significant Aspect of Learning (SAL). How do I use The Highland Literacy Progression?

March 2015 Redraft How do I use the Primary Progression Pathway? When accessing pgs. 4, 13 and 23 electronically you will be able to click on the blue hyperlinks to see one example of what these milestones/ learning statements may look like. These blue hyperlinks take you to Annotated Exemplars available on the Education Scotland website or within the National Assessment Resource (NAR). The Annotated Exemplars sit as one part of the Suite of Resources from Education Scotland. These should be used in conjunction with the Assessing Progress and Achievement Overarching paper, the Literacy and English Assessing Progress and Achievement Paper and the Education Scotland Literacy Progression Framework. The Annotated Exemplars can be used to support discussions around moderation. As Education Scotland and Local Authorities populate the NAR further in March and June we will link these to the milestones/ learning statements in the progression framework. For this reason we recommend accessing the most up-to-date version of the progression framework from the Highland Literacy Blog as it is a live document. March 2015 Redraft How do I use the Primary Progression Pathway? The rest of the progression framework, organised under the three Significant Aspects of Learning – Listening and Talking, Reading and Writing – is made up of statements/ success criteria against each of the Es and Os which can be used by practitioners to support planning and assessment. March 2015 Redraft Early Level – Pg.5 How do I use the Primary Progression Pathway? Each of the Significant Aspects of Learning are then divided into the CfE Levels, with the sub-organisers, e.g. Enjoyment and Choice, sitting below this, linked directly to the Es and Os. Within each of the Levels, the bulleted statements are assessment criteria which inform planning and may be shared with learners. The bullet-point statements are organised in one step, two step or three step progressions within a Level. The bullet-point statements can be used by practitioners to shape Learning Intentions, Success Criteria and build assessment tasks around the Es and Os. Learners will be at different points within the progression, thus supporting differentiation. The example here is Enjoyment and Choice under Listening and Talking. Underneath the Es and Os you will find the highlighted Sub-SALs that are relevant to the sub-organiser. This helps support the delivery of the Literacy Curriculum through the Significant Aspects of Learning.
