Rules of Multiplication
The Laws of Exponents Rules of Multiplication
2
Introduction We know that a2 = a x a a3= a x a x a
So when we multiply a2 and a3, we get a 2 x a 3 a x a x a x a x a ( we have a repeated 5 times) = a5 To make it easier we apply the rule of Multiplication.
3
Multiplication of Exponents:
Rule 1: When multiplying two exponents, the bases are same and the following rule is applied By applying rules of multiplication Xm.Xn=Xm+n (we are adding the power) Base is same (X) Xm.Xn
4
By applying rules of multiplication 63.62=63+2=65
Examples By applying rules of multiplication 63.62=63+2=65 (We are adding the powers) 63.62 Base is same (6) By applying rules of Multiplication 36.32=36+2=38 (we are adding the power ) 36.32 Base is same (3) (-3)7.(-3)2 By applying rules of Multiplication (-3)7.(-3)2=(-3)7+2=(-3)9 (we are adding the power ) Base is same (-3) By applying rules of Multiplication m4.m2=m4+2=m6 (we are adding the power ) m4.m2 Base is same (m)
5
Base are not same (2,3) 25.32 (-4)4.43 Base are not same (-4,4)
So we cannot apply the rules (-4)4.43 Base are not same (-4,4) So we cannot apply the rules

Try these 92 • 94 (- 5)5 • 57 (- x)2 • y3 (-4)6 •(- 4)3
