The aim: - construct meaning and draw conclusions from information, main ideas and supporting details - develop communication skills, critical thinking by analyzing and gathering information about EXPO-2017 in Astana - collaborate with peers and use ICT for knowledge construction

The Teacher Nurmaganbetova Zhanara Serikovna – a teacher of English. Work experience as a teacher: 7 years. Qualification as a teacher: 2-category. School: Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Astana was founded as Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Chemistry and Biology in Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Astana was granted ‘Candidate School’ status for the Diploma Programme. In 2013 Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Astana was successfully authorized and received ‘IB World School’ status. NIS Astana is only school in the Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools network which offers IB programmes and qualifications. “This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy – a commitment to high quality, challenging, and international education.”

Content of the Unit: Rhetorical devices and Public Speaking, Elections, Persuasive speeches and Body Language and the concluding lesson-project “We are Future’s Energy”

In the first phase of the project, students learnt basics of public speaking by using rhetorical techniques such as persuasion, metaphor, hyperbole, etc, and non-verbal communication. Each student was given a text for analysis of any stylistic features of the text using Microsoft Word. Then they presented their finished work to the class.

In the second phase of the project, students were split into 3 groups
In the second phase of the project, students were split into 3 groups. The 1st group were Organizers of Expo They had to develop logo for the Expo and explain it to other students. The 2nd group were Tourism agents for visitors of the Expo. They had to promote one of Kazakhstan's tourism destinations so that tourists were persuaded to visit some parts of Kazakhstan. The 3rd group was responsible for cultural events during Expo. They had to prepare an agenda of activities for guest of the Expo.

During the whole project, students had to use the following software: MS Paint, MS Word, MS Presentation. During discussions, they used Skype to contact other students to collaborate. They also used Movie Maker to create a slideshow about Kazakhstan's nature. They also used AutoCollage to create collection of photos.
