1
Foucalts pendulum and the coriolis effect are proof that Earth rotates on its axis.
2
For most of human history, people thought ALL celestial objects rose in the East, moved across the sky at 150 per hour and set in the west. But its really earth that is moving
3
every hour, the Sun appears to move 15 0 degrees per hour
every hour, the Sun appears to move 15 0 degrees per hour! BUT IT IS REALLY EARTH THAT’S ROTATING 150 PER HOUR.
4
EARTH HAS NIGHT AND DAY BECAUSE IT ROTATES ON ITS AXIS.
EARTH’S SIDE FACING THE SUN HAS “DAY”. THE SIDE AWAY FROM THE SUN IS “NIGHT”
5
EARTH ROTATES 150 DEGREES PER HOUR.
150 X 24= 3600 DEGREES EARTH TAKES 24 HOURS FOR ONE COMPLETE ROTATION!
6
These are all Proof of Earth’s Rotation
Alternating night and day Oblateness – bulging of Earth at the equator due to the speed of approximately 1000 mph Celestial motions (star trails) – appear to move East to West at 15o/hour
7
THIS IS JEAN LEON FOUCAULT, FRENCH PHYSICISTS
IN 1851 HE DISCOVERED THAT A FREELY MOVING PENDULUM WOULD SWING IN A PREDICATABLE MANNER. FOUCAULT REALIZED THAT THIS WAS DUE TO EARTH’S ROTATION The pendulum is NOT ROTATING, only swinging side to side. It APPEARS to rotate because Earth is rotating on its axis..
8
Foucault Pendulum It was connected to swing freely and not be affected by the building The only forces acting on the ball were the downward pull of gravity and inertia.
9
Foucault Pendulum When the pendulum swings freely, its path appears to change in a predictable clockwise direction. What’s really happening?
10
*The “apparent change” of direction of Foucault’s pendulum is evidence of Earth’s rotation.
11
Proof of Earth’s Rotation
2. Coriolis Effect The tendency of all particles of matter moving at Earth’s surface to be deflected from a straight line path.
12
In the Northern Hemisphere, deflection is to the RIGHT.
Coriolis Effect In the Northern Hemisphere, deflection is to the RIGHT. In the Southern Hemisphere, deflection is to the LEFT. Affects winds and ocean currents in the same way.
