Norms for helping -Social Exchange Theory: social behavior is an exchange process, the aim of which is to maximize benefits and minimize costs (reward exceeds cost) -Reciprocity Norm- expectation that will help, not hurt, those who have helped them (scratch mine, I’ll scratch yours) -Social Responsibility Norm- expectation that people will help those needing their help

Extra credit opportunity
9
Extra credit opportunity
Here you have the opportunity to earn some extra credit on your Unit 14 Test -Select whether you want 1 point or 5 points added onto your test grade. But there's a small catch: if more than 10% of the class selects 5 points, then no one gets any points. Your responses will be anonymous to the rest of the class, only I will see the responses.
10
Conflict Perceived incompatibility of actions, goals, or ideas
11
Social Traps -when conflicting parties, by each rationally pursuing their self interest rather than the good of the group, become caught in mutually destructive behavior
12
Enemy perceptions Mirror-image perceptions- mutual views often held by conflicting people, as when each side sees itself as ethical and peaceful, while the other side is evil and aggressive Self-Fulfilling Prophecy- a belief that leads to its own fulfillment
13
Promote Peace and Cooperation
Contact helps!: being around the other groups is good Superordinate goals- shared goals that override differences among people and require their cooperation: work together (WWII/Soviet Union) Communication use a mediator Concilation: move closer together to find even ground
