Star Students Calendar Math 1/15-1/19 Birthdays 1/18 - Nami
Literacy Our book of the week is “Nighttime” and the sight words are “is & had”. Moving forward, we will continue to have two new sight words each week. Please have your child practice reading and writing them at home as well. In Reading Workshop, we will continue our Nonfiction Unit of Study. Student learning will focus on the Non Fiction text features that help us understand and learn new things. Examples of these features are: Table of Contents, Captions, Bold words, and the Glossary. Students will continue to practice the reading strategy: “Flippy the Dolphin”. This reminds students that when they come to a word they don’t know they can “flip” the vowel sound to a long sound to help them. In Writing Workshop, students will begin our How-to Unit of Study. Last week, students began writing “How to be” books. We did one together entitled, “How to be a Kitty”. Students brainstormed great ideas like: “Don’t take a bath!” “Sleep a lot.” and “Scratch trees.” This week students will be reading a book about how to draw using step by step instructions, adding a new detail each time. Students will also generate a list of possible topics for their own “How To” book.
