Prototyping Why Prototype (or Model) Convey a concept to anyone Prove out a concept (how it works) To scale or not Show an appearance model to potential customers, manufactures, investors, etc. Get feedback from users, designers, manufacturing, etc. Learn about the current design Size evaluation – in it’s environment Short run preproduction – evaluate final design (customer feedback and final tweaks, prove out tooling designs, test Analyze with CAD/CAM tools/software for clearances, fits, interferences, strength, thermal properties, moldability, manufacturing, rendering, etc. Don’t – provide a sketch or an illustration and/or a sell sheet 8/12/15 Presentation Courtesy Mark Peterson - Houston Inventors Group

Prototyping Types - Definitions from Wikipedia A Proof-of-Principle Prototype explores some functional, but not all, aspects of the intended design. A Form Study Prototype explores the size and appearance, but not the functionality, of the intended design. A User Experience Prototype captures enough aspects of the intended design that it can support user research. A Visual Prototype captures the size and appearance, but not the functionality, of the intended design. A Functional Prototype captures both function and appearance of the intended design. It may be created in with a different method and scale from final design. Generic Names Breadboard – How it works Sketch – Simple form study Appearance – Looks very close to real thing, but doesn’t function Fully functional Prototype – Looks like, works like Virtual – 3D CAD 8/12/15 Presentation Courtesy Mark Peterson - Houston Inventors Group

Prototyping Possible Materials Paper, pencil, pen, markers
CAD software Foam board (cardboard, poster board, etc) Clay – Sculpy Urethane Foam – high, medium, low density’s 3D Printing materials (get samples) FFF/FDM real plastics SLA/SLS Binder jet – powdery but colors Polyjet Plastic Sheet – vacuum forming Plastic (stock shapes) - bending, machining Wood (balsa too) Metal Anything at a hardware or craft store Vacuum cast urethane molds Sculpy of 3D art class “building fragment” 8/12/15 Presentation Courtesy Mark Peterson - Houston Inventors Group
