BIOCHEMISTRY STAAR Review
Dr. Bertolotti
2
TODAY’S GOAL B.9.A compare the structures and functions of different types of biomolecules, including carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids
3
overview Monomer: building blocks/ subunits
Polymer: monomers joined together through dehydration synthesis or polymerization * Dehydration synthesis- a chemical reaction in which two or more molecules bond by losing one or more water molecules. * Hydrolysis- a chemical reaction in which the interaction of water and a compound result in the breaking up of that compound.

5
PROTEINS Monomer: * amino acids (20 different)
Function: controls the speed of chemical reactions (catalyst), transport substances in and out of cells, fight disease Elements: C,H,O, N Example: enzymes, hemoglobin, collagen held together by peptide bonds Has a specific shape that can denature (change shape) due to high temperatures and change in pH Different shapes = different jobs! Synthesized at ribosomes

Check for understanding!
Read entire slide first, then On a sheet of paper, 1. State 2 ways nucleic acids and proteins are similar 2. State 2 ways nucleic acids and proteins are different Hit the “pause” button now Once completed, click “play” for an analysis of the answers Then answer some additional questions
