2 Dictionary Skills A dictionary tells the readers the meaning of a word. The reader will have to decide which meaning is being used from the context. A dictionary includes symbols that show how to pronounce each part of a word and which part is accented. dictionary test tutor

6 Comprehension Main Idea and Details
Main Idea is the most important point of a paragraph or entire nonfiction text. Supporting details are statements that help prove the point or explain the main idea. Main Idea Main Idea and Supporting Details

7 Comprehension: Make Inferences/ Analyze Character
Like real people, characters in stories have traits, or qualities that give them their personalities. A character’s emotions can change often. A character’s traits are longer lasting parts of their personality. Good readers begin to analyze a character’s traits by noting how he or she is described by the author or the other characters. Good readers also pay attention to the character’s words, and actions to help identify character traits.

9 Comprehension Summarize
A summary is a retelling of the most important facts, ideas, and events in a text. A summary should be in your own words. Summarize as You Read

10 Assonanace Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds within a short passage of verse or prose. Examples Try to light the fire. He gave a nod to the officer with the pocket. fleet feet sweep by sleeping Greeks. Hayden plays a lot.

11 Metaphor A metaphor is a comparison not using the words like or as.
A couple examples would be "The shirt is fire-engine red" and "The cars are sky blue".  I AM LAS VEGAS I am Las Vegas growing by the infinite awake morning by night, or day. I am Las Vegas My hand is the sand.

12 Text Feature: Diagram Diagrams can help a reader visualize information explained in the text. Diagrams usually contain labels that help to identify each part. Captions explain the diagram as a whole. Diagrams provide additional information that may not appear within the text. Look at the diagram on page 103 and calculate how many miles is earth from the sun.

17 Comprehension Problem and Solution
All stories have problems and solutions. The Cat in the Hat What is the problem? What is the solution? What could be another name for The Cat in the Hat?

18 Reading Maps Compass rose- shows the cardinal direction: North, South, East, West. What state is North of Missouri? South? East? West?
