Alzheimer Café- the “Down Low”
In 1997, Dr. Bere Miesen started the first Alzheimer Café in the United Kingdom ( Dr. Miesen started the café due to the need to “improve the education and practice of the emotional aspects of having and living with dementia” (Jones, 2011). The get-togethers are held monthly in café-like settings, such as churches, town halls or other community settings. Free of charge.

Alzheimer Café- what to expect
Held one time monthly for approximately 2 hours. Socialize, refreshments and music. Interactive talk or video relating to a particular theme for the meeting, such as how to tell someone you have dementia; dealing with grief and loss; how to handle stress, etc. (Jones, 2011). Question and answer session. Written info provided on local assistance.

Alzheimer Café- who can attend?
Persons with Alzheimer’s and their families. Regular volunteers who can identify familiar guests and introduce them to newcomers (Jones, 2011). “Core” families who are experienced and can openly share about dementia (Jones, 2011).

Alzheimer Cafe’s- Benefits
A safe place where no one needs to feel embarrassed (Jones, 2011). Reduces the stigma of Alzheimer’s (Jones, 2011). For some people, it’s their only monthly outing outside of medical appointments (Jones, 2011). A place to share and compare stories- successes and disappointments (Jones, 2011). Staff and students attend to supplement both their understanding and education (Jones, 2011).
