2 Citizenship: Having certain rights, duties, and responsibilities under a government

3 Natural-Born Citizen Born in the US or in any US Territory
(14th Amendment) Both parents are citizens OR At least 1 parent is US citizen AND lives in US

4 Process by which an immigrant can become a US citizen
Naturalization Process by which an immigrant can become a US citizen - Govt’t Depeartment: US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) - Must be 18 years old - Must be a legal resident - Waiting Period (usually 5 years) Must show “Good moral character” and “Attachment to principles of the US Constitution” - Must show knowledge of US History and Government (Citizenship Test) - Must go to court and take a loyalty oath (“favorable disposition towards the US”)

5 "I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God."

Person who is in the United States illegally (without documentation) Deportation: Illegal aliens sent back to home country Dual Citizenship: Citizen of two countries E Pluribus Unum: National motto “Out of many, we are one” – we are a nation with many ethnicities; “melting pot” or “salad bowl”
