2 Background Robert Bruce ‘Lord of Annandale’ son of the Earl of Carrick was very interested in the family’s claim to the throne Robert Bruce ‘The Competitor’ wanted to be King Robert Bruce ‘The Competitor’ died 1290 1295 1292 Robert Bruce of Annandale ‘The Competitor’ 1304 His son Robert Bruce ‘Earl of Carrick’ remained loyal to Edward I until his death in 1304 Edward I decided Balliol had strongest claim Robert Bruce ’Earl of Carrick’ Robert Bruce (later to become Robert I - Robert the Bruce)

Bruces were annoyed Balliol was made King Refused to recognise Balliol as King Remained loyal to Edward I Fought against Balliol’s men in 1296 Edward I promised Bruce he would be made King if he helped crush revolts But Edward did not keep his promise….
