To provide a means of quantifying the degree of Blue Light protection offered by a lens allowing for an informed decision by the consumer as to which solution offers the best protection
The use of the Blue Light Protection Factor provides clear and meaningful information for the consumer based upon the potential for HEV damage to the eye, rather than exposure to Blue Light which may or may not be damaging.
A typical clear lens would provide a Blue Light Protection (BLP) Value of near 1 which indicates it is not significantly different than exposure without glasses.
However, sunglasses offering a BLP Value of 10 would provide an exposure reduction by a factor of 10. In other words, when wearing the sunglasses a user would need to be exposed for 10x longer to achieve the same cumulative dose of damaging HEV light. This calculation is based upon published and accepted scientific research of HEV damage to retinal tissue therefore providing a meaningful metric for assessing lens performance
