4 Introductions Must Include
A Grabber – An interesting or thought-provoking opener to grab the reader’s attention (statement, fact, question, quote, statistics…) Background – A brief explanation of the main topic and its context (what is it about, and what was happening) Thesis Statement – a “topic sentence” that defines your essay’s approach to the question; the brain of the essay An Outline – Briefly mention the three points (one per paragraph) you will be covering throughout the essay Link – Connect the introduction to the first body paragraph

5 For Example: Introducing Piggy’s Glasses
Grabber Background Thesis Outline Link It is often said the eye is a window to the soul. If so, glasses would be a necessary doorway, but only if they’re whole.

6 For Example: Introducing Piggy’s Glasses
Grabber Background Thesis Outline Link It is often said the eye is a window to the soul. If so, glasses would be a necessary doorway, but only if they’re whole. In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, a group of boys is stranded on an Island, unable to communicate with the adults of the world. In order to convey the growth, and more importantly the degeneration of the characters, Golding uses a symbolic object to represent his ideas about human nature.

Piggy’s glasses, which are an everyday item in our society, come to represent the moral and social decline of the boys.

8 For Example: Introducing Piggy’s Glasses
Grabber Background Thesis Outline Link It is often said the eye is a window to the soul. If so, glasses would be a necessary doorway, but only if they’re whole. In order to convey the growth, and more importantly the degeneration of the characters, Golding uses a symbolic object to represent his ideas about human nature. Piggy’s glasses, which are an everyday item in our society, come to represent the moral and social decline of the boys. One example can be found in the damage done to the glasses, with each lens representing a different faction of the Island – the whole representing Ralph’s, while the broken is Jack’s. In addition, much like using broken glasses, the boys lost their clarity and clear view of humanity, thus allowing themselves to become savages.

9 For Example: Introducing Piggy’s Glasses
The question is about… The symbolism of Piggy’s glasses in Lord of the Flies It is important because… It gives the audience a different way to see character development It will be answered by... Analysing two interpetations of the broken glasses Grabber Background Thesis Outline Link It is often said the eye is a window to the soul. If so, glasses would be a necessary doorway, but only if they’re whole. In addition, much like using broken glasses, the boys lost their clarity and clear view of humanity, thus allowing themselves to become savages. In order to fully understand the symbolism of the glasses, one must look at the event that led to their breaking.

10 Conclusions Must Include
Thesis Statement– Revisit the thesis statement in the conclusion; rephrase it using new words Outline – Revisit the outline of the essay; show connections between points Significance– Explain why the arguement is important; show its significance to the entire topic, the writer, the reader, and the world Essays are often described as an attempt to “sell” your perspective on an issue. A good essay convinces the reader of the correctness of your argument. An excellent essay goes a step further: it demonstrates to the reader why the argument is especially important or relevant for the topic.

13 For Example: Concluding Piggy’s Glasses
In Lord of the Flies, Piggy’s glasses succeed at becoming a powerful symbol, as it offers a physical representation of the boys’ journey on the Island. By attributing the clash of Ralph and Jack’s opposing factions to the physical damage done to the glasses, as well as the consequences of unclear vision and actions, Golding is able to provide foreshadowing and present ideas not visible at first. By the novel’s end, the glasses come to represent more than just a sole character, but rather the entire message of the novel. Thesis Outline Significance
