2 Ch. 2 Early People Earliest People Big Game Hunters Adaptation
Migrated to the South as the glaciers pushed south. Mostly hunters and some gathering. World was very different. Mammoths, Mastodons, Giant Bison and diverse plant life. Climate was less dramatic than it is now. Adaptation Eventually, the climate began to change. Weather began to be more like what we have today. Some plants and animals were unable to adapt. Humans had to alter their houses, hunting patterns, and gathering habits.

3 Ch. 2 Early People Technology
Early people in Kansas received new ideas from people in the east. New ideas Pottery Vessels Improved food storage. Bow and Arrow Improved hunting methods. Old methods used an atlatl (spear thrower) Cultivation People began to grow gardens.

4 Ch. 2 Early People Village Farming
800 years ago some people began to live in permanent villages. Most settlements overlooked rivers/streams. Homes Built with poles buried in the ground. Covered with grass and plastered with clay. Corn, beans, squash, and other crops began to be cultivated regularly. Food storage pits are proof that these people were successful.

5 Ch. 2 Early People Tribes on the Plains
American Indians have moved in and out of this region for thousands of years. These people lived in large family units called tribes. Wichita, Osage, Pawnee, Kansa, Plains Apache The tribes did not speak the same language Wore varying styles of clothing Ate different foods Created different art These tribes lived closely to each other but remained civil. They did not believe in ownership of land.

6 Ch. 2 Early People Horses Buffalo
We are unsure of when horses came to the Plains. They were acquired from the Spanish in the Southwest. Significant upgrade from dogs. Could carry bigger and heavier loads. Buffalo One of the most important resources on the Plains. Addition of horses made it easier to hunt buffalo. Tribes would travel seasonally to hunt buffalo herds. Tipi’s were created for easier transportation of homes.
