Where can I work?

What type of work is right for me?
Think of two places you would be interested in working at. These can be local businesses (JB Hi-Fi, Cotton On, etc) or types of businesses (restaurant, food court). Write a summary of tasks or duties you would have to perform in that job. Explain the benefits or what you like about each job. You can use the jobs you compared in another activity if you like. Job/Company Duties Positive things about the job Things to think of when considering a workplace: Location of the job Hours Duties you will have to do Work environment Skills needed and training opportunities

How to find work You can use your contacts, search for jobs online or let your feet do the searching. Make a list of places you think you will search for jobs: Contacts (people you know who work) Shop/resteraunts to visit Websites of stores/resteraunts Job search websites Tips for visiting stores/places to drop off your resume: Bring plenty of copies of your resume Try to have a cover letter aimed at the type of store, such as food vs. clothing. Approach the customer service desk if possible. Smile and try to show who you are. If you’re not sure, just be polite!

Getting an interview Once you have decided where to apply, get moving!
Highlight the things you can do now: Update resume Set up a voic account on phone Write a basic cover letter, or 2 different ones if applying for two different types of jobs Find something clean to wear Print copies of resume Record of where resumes are handed out Easy opening lines for when applying in person: “Hi, my name is ___, I am looking for some after school or weekend work, can I give you my resume?” “Hello, I was wondering if you had any jobs available at the moment?” “Hi, I am interested in working here, it’s a great place. Are there any jobs available?” List of places I can apply to in person:

Applying Online Applying online is different for each company. Pick 2 companies you are interested in and compare their online application process. Put a ‘Y’ in the box if the company provides these features or asks these questions. Interview Preparation
Think of a job you have researched and then complete the interview dialogue below. Think of three additional questions you would ask an employer about the job. BOSS: Thanks for coming in for an interview today. Can you tell me why you applied for the job? YOU: The job looked really interesting and I feel I have all the skills to do it. BOSS: So in your resume you said you have good communication skills. Can you tell me about a time when you used these? YOU: BOSS: Sometimes the job can get busy, how would you manage in a busy situation? BOSS: [Think of a question an employer may ask you]

Job Search Goals Create two “SMART” goals for your job search Specific- clear about what you want to happen Measurable- you can track your goal and know if it is completed Action- what do you need to do to achieve your goal?
