Skeletal System Your hands and feet contain more than half of the total number of bones in your body. About one in every 500 people has an extra rib. The hyoid (a bone in your throat) is the only bone in the entire body that isn’t connected to another bone. Also, a broken hyoid typically indicates death by strangulation. Your teeth are the strongest substance in your body. Pound for pound, your bones are stronger than steel.

Skeletal System (cont.)
The hyoid bone is a connecting point for many of the muscles that control the mouth and jaw. Its fairly easy to grasp the function of hands and feet. The extra rib is a mutation of the skeleton, and can actually cause health problems by crushing veins in the throat. Teeth are used to break food down before it goes into your digestive system. That’s what I call “Food for Thought”! The bones are a support structure, which is why they have to be so strong.

Nervous System There are more nerve cells in the human brain than there are stars in the milky way. If we lined up all the neurons in our body it would be around 600 miles long. The left side of the human brain controls the right side of the body, while the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body. The nervous system is able to transmit impulses at the speed of 100 meters per second. The nervous system regulates voluntary and involuntary activities.

Nervous System (cont.) Nerve cells are used to transmit signals from the brain to the body and vice versa. The signals are sent due to stimuli and you moving your body. The signals need to be sent ASAP, which is why they move so fast. The involuntary beating of your heart is controlled by the nervous system, as well as you jumping up and down (voluntary).

System Connections Skeletal & Nervous-The main stem of the nervous system is connected to the spinal chord of the skeleton. Skeletal & Almost Every Other System-The skeleton is the support structure for the entire body system. Nervous & Cardiovascular-The nervous system regulates involuntary activities, such as the beating of your heart. The skeleton has bone marrow that creates blood cells for the lymphatic system.
