1 Maker space Safety Orientation

2 Emergency Evacuation Exit through front door (or conference room door) and turn an immediate right, follow the stairs down and out of the building Exit through back door and turn an immediate left and leave through the front of the building (Carruther’s Hall) DO NOT use the elevator in case of emergency. In the event of an emergency, please: - exit through the front door and follow the stairs down - exit through back door and follow the corridor out of the building -as always, do not use the elevator in case of an emergency

3 In Case of a fire Pull the fire alarm located in the break- point lounge near the elevator to the right of SparQ Studios and use the portable fire extinguisher if possible. Note: If the fire is out of control, DO NOT attempt to extinguish it. If emergency is a fire, make sure to pull the alarm located next to the back stairwell - if fire is small use portable fire extinguisher - if fire is out of control or you do not feel comfortable using the extinguisher just follow evacuation procedure

4 Use the first aid box near the Director’s desk if needed

5 Unsafe conditions: let a Supervisor Know
These include: Messy workspace Hostile/aggressive behavior Neglecting personal protective equipment (PPE) Supervisor will fill out incident report form and forward to EH&S.

6 Personal protective equipment (PPE)
The Studio provides Safety Glasses & Protective Gloves near the First Aid Kit in front of the Director’s desk. Safety glasses are to be worn whenever inside the taped zone. Protective Gloves are to be worn whenever moving scrap metal or scrap wood to a location in the studio. Ear plugs & dust masks also available NOTE: Protective Gloves CANNOT be worn during use of certain machinery inside the taped area. You will learn this in the woodshop training

7 Footwear Policy/Food and Drink
Footwear must be closed-toe. NO FOOD OR DRINKS in any workbench, ONLY on work tables.

8 Working in the Maker space
NO ANIMALS ALLOWED in the studio. Let the Director or a Supervisor know before you bring a harmful chemical or large material into the space. Long hair MUST be tied back and loose clothing MUST be tucked in General self-explanatory guidelines No animals Let the staff know if you are planning to bring a harmful chemical or large material into the space for whatever reason

9 Taped Zone High risk location Safety googles always on
Hair tied back Sleeves rolled up No loose jewelry Safety googles always on Gloves always on when handling scrap material but removed when working with certain machinery NOTE: Additional training on proper use of each machine is needed to operate the equipment inside the taped zone

10 Machine Specific Safety
All and extra safety precautions are noted in the laminated safety sheet next to each machinery ALWAYS read and remember the safety precautions in the safety sheet before using the machine ALWAYS turn off the machine after you are done using Certain machines will need a key to operate which can be found on the Director’s desk

11 3D Printers Keep your hands out of the build plate when printing
DO NOT level the build plate while the plate or the extruder are hot Policy: Free 3d printing for up to 4 hours

12 Soldering iron Alert the surrounding members and staff that you will be soldering (due to the presence of harmful fumes) NEVER touch the hot element of the soldering iron (400°C) ALWAYS turn on carbon fan and place it near the soldering element to filter toxic fumes

13 Important policies No work without staff supervision
Workshops need to be requested at least a week ahead of time Scrap material is free of charge (within reason)
