1 ASU Lab Closures and Remedial Actions
Overview Of Lab Closeouts 1.GWC B63 2. VA Hospital 3. PSF577 very active year for lab closures, lab moves, abandoned chemicals, odd cylinders and decontamination.

2 ASU Closures Requiring Follow Up Actions
EH&S is made aware of lab status change. EH&S conducts initial closure inspection. Areas of concern are identified. Proposal is generated and funding is discussed. EH&S coordinates all aspects of the project including sub contactors, sample analysis, materials and waste disposal. EH&S completes closeout inspection. 60%-lab initiated, 20%-EH&S observations, 20%- CPMG notification. 4. Mandated to have funding in place for non-baseline services.

3 Goldwater B63 Axitron MOCVD
May 2014 Axitron MOCVD machine closure called for dismantling, removal of equipment and lab decontamination. Several groups were involved with this project, manufacturing techs, lab staff, environmental contractor, ASU facilities management and ASU EH&S. Purchased in 2000 for $750K after market value in 2014 < $500, PI called it a ball and chain, tried several times time remove, funding was never available.

4 Goldwater B63 Gas Lines Cleaned cut and capped 2012.
Proposal submitted/ accepted. Dismantling prep. Scrubber and tanks removed. Decontaminate reaction chamber, glove box, tools, benches, flooring. Rack system and electronics removed. Lab checkout completed 1. Ammonia and Nitrogen, 3. PI wanted to reduce labor costs, 4. Env. Contractor tanks and lines contained NH4OH,NAOH,H2SO4,KMnO4, 5. Lab and equipment decontaminated with acetone water solution.

5 Goldwater B63 Scrubbers Gas lines contained Bromine, Silanes and Hydrogen flushed, purged and capped in 2012.

6 Polytechnic VA Hospital Generators
January 2014 closeout consisted of removal of hazmat from HVAC and machine shops, draining and disconnection of fuel lines from tanks, generators and piping and decontamination of pipe trenches and generator pads.

7 Polytechnic Campus VA Hospital HVAC/Mechanical shops
Proposal Submitted/Accepted. 400 lbs of hazmat collected. Fuel removed from tanks, generators and piping . Piping disconnected from generators. Piping trenches and generator pads decontaminated. Over half of the Hazmat diverted for reuse. Closure completed ASU used absorbent pads and speedi dry to decontaminate trenches and pads. School on the S. end of building, principal wanted periodic reporting while project was ongoing, started fuel transfers at 6:30 am. 70% of chemical products( paints, oils, oxidizers, aerosols, janitorial supplies) were diverted for reuse to Facilities management. CPMG remodel project funding - $ Polytechnic Campus VA Hospital HVAC/Mechanical shops

8 PSF 577 Mercury Vacuum Lines
July 2014 closeout consisted of dismantling and disposal of Hg contaminated vacuum lines, pumps, pistons, removal a large volume of abandoned chemicals and the decontamination lab flooring and benches. Gas extraction and manipulation CO2,H2O,H2,SIF4

9 PSF 577 Abandoned Chemicals
200 + lbs of RCRA waste

10 PSF 577 Proposal submitted/accepted
Vacuum lines and glass tubing collected. 350 lbs of Hg debris, 200 lbs elemental mercury and 200 lbs of RCRA waste removed. Lab floors, and bench tops were decontaminated. Mercury vapor surveys were conducted before, during and after project. Lab closeout was issued. 2. PI staff was very comfortable dismantling lines, saved great deal on labor charges lbs of elemental Hg was diverted to researcher on campus, 4. ASU decontaminated lab with Hg hepa vacuum and Mercsorb powder where needed., 5. Pel =0.1 mg/m3=.01219ppm,TWA = .05ppm, Start ppm, During ppm, End ppm Departmental funding-$
