2 Fiction Fiction=Fake Not 100% real
Examples: Lord of the Rings, Freak the Mighty, “Amigo Brothers,” or “Song of the Trees” Genres included: Fantasy, plays, short stories, mysteries, or anything not involving 100% real elements

3 Non-Fiction Non-fiction=not fake Real, true, 100% true
Examples: The Diary of Anne Frank, “Long Walk to Freedom” Genres included: Informational text, autobiographies, biographies, interviews, etc.

4 Poetry Verse and rhythmic writing in verse that uses imagery to create an emotional response Examples: “Hector the Collector,” “The Raven,” or “Madam and the Rent Man”

5 Short Stories A fiction that is so short that it doesn’t have sub-plots Example: “Amigo Brothers,” “Stolen Day,” or “A Day’s Wait”

6 Mystery Fiction dealing with the unraveling of secrets and crimes
Example: Sherlock Holmes stories or murder mysteries

7 Plays Story (plot), conflict, and emotion are given through dialogue spoken between characters Examples: Romeo and Juliet

8 Biographies A narrative about a real person’s life written by someone else Example: If I were to write a narrative about your life, it would be a biography

9 Auto-Biographies A narrative about a real person’s life written by that person Example: If you write a narrative of your own life, that is an autobiography

10 Fantasies Fiction with strange or other-worldly settings or characters
Examples: Harry Potter stories or Lord of the Rings

11 Historical Fiction A story with fictional, or not real characters, in a historical setting. Examples: Gone with the Wind, “Song of the Trees,” or The Three Muskateers

12 Realistic Fiction Stories that can actually be true and are true to life Example: “Amigo Brothers” or Freak the Mighty

13 Science Fiction Story of actual, imagined, or potential science usually set in the future or on other planets Examples: The Hunger Games, A Wrinkle in Time, 2001: A Space Odyssey

14 Myths Based in part on historical events, that reveals human behavior and natural phenomena by symbolism; often pertaining to the actions of the gods Example: Hercules, Zeus, Medusa

15 Parables Parable = People
A story that has only human characters that speak Teaches a lesson Examples: “The Good Samaritan”

16 Fables Stories that include animals that move and talk Teach a lesson
“The Lion and the Mouse” or “The Tortoise and the Hare”

17 Epic Poem A long narrative poem, telling of a hero’s deeds.
Examples: Iliad and The Odyssey

18 Tall-Tales Tales that are passed down by mouth
EXAGGERATION, or making things more than what they appear Examples: Paul Bunyan or Pecos Bill

On page 852, copy the chart at the bottom of the page. While reading “Long Road to Freedom” on pages 846 to 850, fill out the chart for Nelson Mandela While reading “Rosa Parks” on pages 853 to 858, fill out the chart for Rosa Parks Then, on page 861, under assignment one, choose to write essay a or essay b
