4 NSF 17-534 Solicitation Important dates:
May 17th: UM Office of Research declaration of intent. There may be an internal competition, as each university can submit ONE proposal as the lead institution. June 19th: request due for Letters of Collaboration from BD Hubs. The BD Hubs want to receive the requests before each institution’s internal decision is made. Sept. 18th: full proposal to NSF.

5 NSF Solicitation “This solicitation aims to augment the BD Hubs and the existing BD Spokes by establishing a series of additional BD Spokes, with each BD Spoke proposing activities on a topic that aligns with the priorities identified by the corresponding BD Hubs. BD Spokes must work in close concert with their corresponding regional BD Hub to formulate their research agendas and plan their activities.”

6 BIG DATA REGIONAL HUBS (BD HUBS)

7 BIG DATA REGIONAL HUBS (BD HUBS)

8 NSF Solicitation The Big Data activities of a BD Spoke will be guided by the following broad themes: Accelerating progress towards addressing societal grand challenges relevant to the regional and national priority areas defined by the BD Hubs; Helping automate the Big Data lifecycle; and Enabling access to and spurring the use of important and valuable available data assets, including international data sets where relevant. In particular, this solicitation is not meant to fund proposals in which fundamental research is the primary activity.

9 NSF Solicitation Proposed BD Spoke projects are expected to focus on their articulated regional challenges and opportunities. In particular, this solicitation welcomes submissions addressing the following areas of emphasis: Education Data Intensive Research in the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Data-driven Research in Chemistry Neuroscience Data Analytics for Security Replicability and Reproducibility in Data Science The areas emphasized above in no way preclude submission of proposals concerning other topics. Any topic deemed appropriate and approved by a coordinating BD Hub is welcome.

11 NSF Solicitation If the proposed BD Spoke is on a topic similar to one or more currently funded BD Spokes in any region, the Project Description must describe in what sense the proposed work differs substantially from the existing project(s) or how the proposed BD Spoke activities augment or complement that of the existing project(s) when it does not differ substantially.

14 NSF 17-534 Solicitation Education 1. Which area?
Data Intensive Research in the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Data-driven Research in Chemistry Neuroscience Data Analytics for Security Replicability and Reproducibility in Data Science These listed areas have funds set aside. NSF stated that all areas are welcome. However…

15 NSF 17-534 Solicitation 2. SMALL or MEDIUM?
Each SMALL project will be funded at $100,000 to $500,000 total for up to three years, subject to the availability of funds. These awards are intended for collaborative projects, involving multiple institutions, for establishing BD Spokes on specific topics/themes related to Big Data innovation. Each MEDIUM project will be funded at $500,001 to $1,000,000 total for up to three years, subject to the availability of funds. MEDIUM proposals must deliver tangible outcomes.

16 MIDAS SUPPORT We will help the UM team work with BD Hubs and existing Spokes for Letters of Collaboration, coordination, and any other communication and planning. We will help teams who are not selected by UMOR to seek collaboration with other institutions. We will provide limited support in other pre-award coordination and proposal review. We will help identify UM resources (CSCAR, ARC-TS and others) and collaborators.
