Checkpoint: The Small Intestine
Please take out your two column notes from last class for a homework check
2
Learning Intentions Identify the pancreas as a source gland for insulin, and describe the function of insulin in maintaining blood sugar levels. Describe the major functions of the liver Explain the role of bile in the emulsification of the fats Relate digestive enzymes to their glandular sources and describe the digestion reactions they promote. Describe the role of sodium bicarbonate in pancreatic juice Describe the importance of pH level in various regions of the digestive tract.
3
V.O.D What does the pancreas do?
Students share – discuss roles of the pancreas Students read through notes for today!
4
Homeostasis Role: Blood Glucose Levels
5
The Role of Pancreas In Digestion
When chyme enters the duodenum it triggers hormone CCK to be released into the bloodstream. CCK promotes: Increase in digestive enzymes (lipase, amylase, trypsin) Release of bicarbonate pH Discuss importance of pH throughout the digestion system – including the deactivation of pepsin in duodenum. Discuss the enzymes and how they help with chemical digestion Lipase – fats – on active on the surface – that is why they still need bile Amylase – continues the job that was started in the mouth Tryspin – release as trypsinogen – enterokinase converts to active form of tryspin – protein digestion
6
The Role of Pancreas In Digestion
When chyme enters the duodenum it triggers Proscretin. Proscretin --- converts to secretin. Secretin triggers the liver to produce bile. Bile is stored in the gall bladder and involved in emulsification of fats into micelles

V.O.D: The role of the liver
8
The Liver and Gall Bladder
All blood travelling through the capillary beds of the intestine goes directly to the liver before returning to the heart. The liver begins the removal of toxins. The liver is also involved in producing the storing various nutrients including glycogen and fat soluble vitamins.
9
Learning Activity Create a Mindmap of the function of the digestive juices and hormones. Include the function of each substance, and the release gland Include arrows to present their connections You will have a quiz on digestive enzymes and hormones next class. However, you can use your mindmap! Mind map should include: Topic Subtopics Branches Connections Descriptive phrases
