Figure 1 Example of multiplanar reformatting of data obtained from transverse cuts CT scans. In this option of multiplanar reformatting, oblique planes can be viewed along planes that are not orthogonal to the body main axis. This tool is particularly useful to display structures that always follow oblique planes, such as the portal vein. Displaying the structures along these planes can allow correlation with EUS images. Figure 2 Example of a work station in an endoscopy unit. Reformatting of data, which is computer intensive, occurred at the user client computer. Two screens are potentially useful: a standard computer screen that can be used for electronic medical record and a specialized monitor to display endoscopic or radiologic images. In this setting, the specialized monitor can be set according to DICOM standard for viewing radiology images and also set according to the endoscopy setting for viewing endoscopy images and movies. Figure 3 Schematic of the network architecture of the implementation of IGIT at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto. The purpose of the implementation is to allow close educational collaboration between gastroenterology, pathology, radiology, and surgery. In this implementation, the user sends a DICOM format file to SecureVault. From an Osirix workstation, the same user requests the patient image to be viewed. The images can be processed and stored in the Secure Vault (diagram is a courtesy of Jacob Clingerman and Shane Gorman of Apple Corp, Cupertino, CA).
