Grammar Notes Summary - Modifiers
Dangling. A phrase that does not describe anything in the sentence. Add a subject. “Smiling, handshakes were exchanged (incorrect). Smiling, we exchanged handshakes (correct)” Misplaced. A phrase that describes is not close enough to the subject and should be moved. “Sailing on the ocean, a shark was spotted by us. (incorrect). Sailing on the ocean, we spotted a shark (correct).

1. The man was stopped for speeding in the blue sweater. The man in the blue sweater was stopped for speeding.

One Word Modifiers Adjectives or adverbs that describe nouns, verb, or other adverbs Come in three forms: Positive, Comparative, Superlative Positive: compares one Comparative: compares two Superlative: compares three or more

ALL one syllable and some two syllable words
Positive: Leave the word as is. She runs FAST. Comparative: Add -er to the root word. She runs faster than I do. Superlative: Add -est She runs fastest of all of us.

Some two syllable words and ALL three syllable words
Positive: leave the word as is. She is beautiful. Comparative: add “more” to the root word She is more beautiful than I am. Superlative: add “most” to the root word She is the most beautiful of all.
