Welcome! Directions: Please go through the power point and follow the directions. Complete the tables on your lab paper and identify the Unknown metals. --- READ ALL DIRECTIONS BEFORE ASKING--- CHECK THE ADDITIONAL HELP SLIDES In order to do this lab, you MUST use internet explorer or firefox Type this into google search : (you might have to “allow” flash to run)

The lab looks like this…

Specific Heat Virtual Lab
1. Click on the metal "SILVER" in the top left of the screen. 2. Set the parameters to the following: mass of metal = 120 g temp of metal = 220 C mass of water = 100 g temp of water = 20 C 3. Record the specific heat of the metal and the water (both specific heats are under the temp box) Click START. 5. Record the final temperature of the water and the metal (WAIT FOR THE LINE TO GO FLAT!!) (Round to 2 decimal points) REPEAT the experiment for the remaining five metals, two of which are unknowns. (use the same mass and temps as before) 7. Fill in the tables and try to IDENTIFY the unknown metals. alot of the information will be the same in the table… this is ok. Check next slides for help Ready to Identify? Click here to see the table

Additional Help 1st Table:
To find the final temperature of the Water/Metal, Click start and watch the graph.. When the line goes flat and the temperature doesn’t change a lot, write that down.. Round to 2 decimal points. 2nd Table: (a lot is copied from the 1st table) To find the ΔTemp, Take the final temperature of the Water/Metal and subtract the initial temperature of the metal. YES, IT WILL BE NEGATIVE – the temperature went DOWN. To find the Heat energy lost by metal, Use Q=mcΔt . (This will also be negative, since the metal LOST heat) Of Metal Of Metal Or lost
5
Additional Help 3rd Table: (a lot is copied from the 1st table)
To find the ΔTemp, Take the final temperature of the Water/Metal and subtract the initial temperature of the water. This will be a positive number. To find the Heat energy gained by water, Use Q=mcΔt . (This will be positive, since the water GAINED heat) Of Water Of WATER Or lost 4th Table: Copy both numbers from the 2nd and 3rd tables, one should be negative and one positive. They should be VERY CLOSE.
6
Additional Help The heat lost by Metal X and Metal Y should be equal and opposite to the heat gained by the water of both. Solve for the specific heat of both of the unknown metals. then use the table to identify which metals they are. CLICK HERE FOR TABLE Heat lost by metal Change in Temp (look at table 2) Mass of Metal (look at table 1)
