1 Unit 1 Review The internet

2 What exactly is the internet?
One definition could be: An independent global network of networks which use standardized communication protocols

3 Who owns the internet? Sitcom “Norm” episode Short answer: No one. In more detail: network of networks – independent. Universities, governments, private individuals and firms. We all do, sort of. Think of it as a knock knock or a Chuck Norris joke.  Started by a few and now ‘owned’ by everyone.

4 But… who governs the internet?
Again, sort of all of us, and none of us. Governments can control the cables and networks within their territory Schools and institutions can control what they maintain IETF – Internet Engineering Task Force  no ‘members’ but an open society

5 How are bits involved? Bits  binary digits (ones and zeros)
Easiest and most efficient way to sent information  “Morse code on steroids” Bits travel through physical copper wires as electric current (high and low currents become  ones and zeros) Bits travel across the ocean as light in fiber optic cables (again, high and low freq.) Those bits are received by a computer and translated into a message / command When a computer sends a message via internet, it sends it in packets.

6 What is a packet for other than ketchup?
HTTP takes our URL and sends it to DNS to request IP DNS translates the URL into IP address# TCP then takes message/ website and breaks it up into small packets (think cutting up a 5 lb steak into bite sized pieces) TCP puts the IP address (to and from) on each packet as well as instructions on how to reassemble the message from packets.

7 Sending packets Computer sends packets to a router which determines how the packets should travel. The packets travel multiple paths and the computer will send multiple copies so the message is sure to get there. This is called redundancy. You get the message!

8 All this means what? What are your thoughts?
