Renaissance in Italy Birthplace of the Renaissance- Latin “Rebirth” or “Revival” period of creative growth- Politically, Socially, Economically, and Culturally. Changes shaped people’s views about themselves and their world

How the Crusades caused the Renaissance
1 How the Crusades caused the Renaissance European port cities expanded. Venice and Genoa become major powers- sending supplies to the Crusaders, receiving cargo from the East. The arts of navigation and construction of larger ships Portugal and Spain increase voyages of discovery. Inspired by desire to obtain the luxury goods Crusaders found Demand created for silk, cotton, spices, and porcelain, but expensive because Turks and Arabs controlled access. The Voyages of Discovery, were designed to establish trade contacts with the East, primarily China. Islamic writings as well as classical works lost to the West after the fall of Rome began to reappear to Western scholars. Gradually a new philosophical tradition, inspired by the classics, rose to compete with the Catholic Church

1 Why Did the Renaissance Begin in Italy? Italy had been the center of the Roman empire. The cities of Italy had survived the Middle Ages and grown into prosperous centers of trade and manufacturing. A wealthy merchant class in the Italian city-states stressed education and individual achievement and spent lavishly on the arts. Cities of Renaissance Italy- Genoa, Florence, Milan, and Venice The Papal States- Throne of the Catholic Church

- Asia- China and India - Mid-East: Egypt Byzantium, and Persia - Africa As Trade grew- peasants, traders, merchants, and nobles moved to cities

world 14th to 17th Century Venice- Trade with Ottoman Empire Relied heavily on Jewish merchants to act as middle-men between Christians and Muslims Florence- Manufacturing, textiles, and Banking

Social structure was not based around manor life, but city-life and trade Guilds- groups where members are involved in the same trade; Metalworkers, merchants, bakers, etc. As guilds became more powerful, they wanted a greater say in politics and government, the Popolo, or organization of guilds fought for rights Raised status of the “Common Man” to “Citizen”
