4 Education optional kindergarten education is provided for all children between three and six years old, after which school attendance is compulsory for at least nine years primary education usually lasts for four to six years secondary education includes three traditional types of schools focused on different academic levels: the “Gymnasium”, the “Realschule” and the “Hauptschule” the Gesamtschule unifies all secondary education

10 Facts and figures Gießen is capital of both the district of Giessen and the administrative region of Giessen the largest river in Giessen is the Lahn botanic garden the population is approximately 78,000, with roughly 28,000 university students

the University of Giessen, called Justus Liebig University it is named after its most famous faculty member, Justus von Liebig, the founder of modern agricultural chemistry and inventor of the artificial fertiliser covers the areas of arts/humanities, business, dentistry, economics, law, medicine, science, social sciences, and veterinary medicine university hospital which has two sites Gießen and Marburg is the only private university hospital in Germany

15 Comprehensive school FES is a so-called kooperative Gesamtschule
Förderstufe, Hauptschule, Realschule and Gymnasium offer college preparatory classes in most cases students attending our school graduate with the Hauptschulabschluss and the Realschulabschluss depending on how well they did in school
