2 Do Now: Take out notebook, homework, and pencil
What is the path that food takes through the digestive system? Pick THREE parts and explain what happens to the food there

3 Essential Questions: What is the main function of the excretory system? What are the main organs in this system? Engagement Video

4 Glue notes on page

5 Excretory System The main function is to filter blood and remove liquid waste from the body Works with the circulatory, respiratory, endocrine and integumentary systems to maintain homeostasis (balance) of water, blood pressure etc.

6 Kidney (2 in body) Main function is to filter waste products out of the blood Blood enters through renal arteries and passes back to circulation through the renal veins Helps endocrine system form red blood cells and the circulatory system to remove waste from blood Renal artery Renal vein

7 Ureters Muscular tubes that carry urine from kidneys to bladder
2 of them, one for each kidney

8 Bladder Pear shaped and holds urine Holds 400-600 mL (2.5 cups)
Emptying of bladder takes place by contraction of smooth muscles

11 Quick Action – Excretory System Do this on page
Look at your drawing of the excretory system. It only has four parts. Come up with a quick mnemonic to help you remember the order of the organs beginning with the kidneys. mnemonic © KeslerScience.com

12 Accessory Organs Not part of the path of urine but play a part in removal of waste Liver- filters blood from the digestive tract Lungs- removes carbon dioxide when exhaled Skin- secretes a fluid waste called sweat

13 Symptoms of dehydration
Excretory System Hydration Water makes up half of your body weight. You lose water when you go to the bathroom, sweat, and breathe. If you don’t replace the water you lose, you become dehydrated. Symptoms of dehydration Little or no urine, or urine that is darker than usual Sleepiness or fatigue Extreme thirst Headaches Confusion Dizziness © KeslerScience.com

14 Half of class will do reading activity
You must read, answer, AND highlight/underline where you found your answer Other half will work on assessment sheet 7 mins and then we will switch

15 Creative Writing Assignment
Start in class and finish for homework
