0-13 Representing Data
2
Frequency Table Uses Tally marks to record and display frequencies of events.
3
Bar Graph Compares categories of data with bars representing the frequencies.
4
Example 1 pg. P41 Make a Bar Graph
MUSIC: The table shows the results of a student survey on favorite music. Make a bar graph to display the data. Music Frequency Country 13 Hip-Hop 35 Metal 20 Rock 32
5
Cumulative Frequency It is the sum of frequency and the frequencies of all preceding events.
6
Histogram A type of bar graph used to display numerical data that have been organized into equal intervals.
7
Example 2 pg. P41 Make a Histogram and a Cumulative Frequency Histogram
VOLUNTEERS: The table shows the ages of the volunteers at an animal shelter. Make histograms of the frequencies and the cumulative frequencies. Ages Frequency 16-25 6 26-35 4 36-45 9 46-55 12 56-65 8

9
Line graph Used to show how data changes over a period of time.
10
Example 3 pg. P42 Make a Line Graph
WIND: Make a line graph of the wind speed forecast data. Wind speed Forecast (mph) Midnight 4 Noon 21 3:00 A.M. 5 3:00 P.M. 24 6:00 A.M. 8 6:00 P.M. 14 9:00 A.M. 11 9:00 P.M. 17

Example 3 pg. P42 Make a Line Graph
WIND: Make a line graph of the wind speed forecast data. Wind speed Forecast (mph) Midnight 4 Noon 21 3:00 A.M. 5 3:00 P.M. 24 6:00 A.M. 8 6:00 P.M. 14 9:00 A.M. 11 9:00 P.M. 17
12
Stem-and-Leaf Plot The digits in the least place value form the leaves, and the other digits form the stems.
13
Example 4 pg. P42 Make a stem-and-leaf plot
SHIPPING: The weights in pounds of 25 packages shipped from a mailing center are listed below. Use the data to make a stem-and-leaf plot. 3 18 35 20 5 9 4 2 10 12 15 22 17 16 38 11 23 41

15
Circle Graph A graph that shows the relationship between parts of the data and the whole.
16
Example 5 pg. P43 Make a Circle Graph
The table shows how the Astronomy Club raised $500. Make a circle graph of the data. Astronomy Club Fundraising Source Amount ($) Car Washes 125 Fish Fry 150 Game-a-thon 75 Poster Sales
17
Example 5 pg. P43 Make a Circle Graph
The table shows how the Astronomy Club raised $500. Make a circle graph of the data. Astronomy Club Fundraising Source Amount ($) Car Washes 125 Fish Fry 150 Game-a-thon 75 Poster Sales
18
Box-and-Whisker plot A graphical representation of the five-number summary of a data set. (the box represents the interquartile range.)
19
Example 6 pg. P43 Make a box-and-whisker plot
Draw a box-and-whisker plot for these data. 20, 17, 23, 26, 19, 28, 4, 20, 24
20
Example 6 pg. P43 Make a box-and-whisker plot
Draw a box-and-whisker plot for these data. 20, 17, 23, 26, 19, 28, 4, 20,

Example 7 pg. P44 Compare Data
Mrs. Heflin is comparing the performances of her class on the past two chapter tests. CHAPTER 5: 76, 81, 72, 83, 88, 79, 77, 84, 86, 79, 79, 81, 83, 85 CHAPTER 6: 91, 88, 77, 69, 93, 86, 88, 94, 65, 70, 63, 72, 91, 68 1.) Draw a double box-and-whisker plot for the data 2.) Use the box-and-whisker plot to compare the data 3.) Would it be appropriate to say students did much better on the Chapter 6 test? Explain.

Example 7 pg. P44 Compare Data
Mrs. Heflin is comparing the performances of her class on the past two chapter tests. CHAPTER 5: 76, 81, 72, 83, 88, 79, 77, 84, 86, 79, 79, 81, 83, 85 CHAPTER 6: 91, 88, 77, 69, 93, 86, 88, 94, 65, 70, 63, 72, 91, 68 2.) Use the box-and-whisker plot to compare the data The data have significantly different interquartile ranges. While the median scores are about the same, the scores for Chapter 6 varied much more than the scores from chapter 5

Example 7 pg. P44 Compare Data
Mrs. Heflin is comparing the performances of her class on the past two chapter tests. CHAPTER 5: 76, 81, 72, 83, 88, 79, 77, 84, 86, 79, 79, 81, 83, 85 CHAPTER 6: 91, 88, 77, 69, 93, 86, 88, 94, 65, 70, 63, 72, 91, 68 3.) Would it be appropriate to say students did much better on the Chapter 6 test? Explain. No, some scores were better, but others were not as good.
25
Example 8 pg. P45 Select a Display
Determine which graph is the best way to display each set of data. Explain. 1.) The amount of sales for each novel an author writes. 2.) A person’s monthly budget.
26
Example 8 pg. P45 Select a Display
Determine which graph is the best way to display each set of data. Explain. 1.) The amount of sales for each novel an author writes. Since the data will change from novel to novel, a line graph will provide a clear picture of the difference in sales from novel to novel. 2.) A person’s monthly budget. Since the data will show how parts are related to a whole, a circle graph will provide a clear distribution of the different parts of a budget.
