Parenting Styles LO How do children develop socially and emotionally? The first relationships children encounter are with their parents or caregivers. Much of what a child learns about social relationships is the result of the parent-child relationship. Different parenting styles create different environments in which children learn things like conflict resolution and a sense of self. Democratic/authoritative and authoritarian parents are the most involved in their children’s lives. Permissive parents may be involved, but they seek the role of friend, rather than parent. Uninvolved parents, as the name implies, often do not know what is going on in their children’s lives.
