2. Archival Project Introduction
Asheville, North Carolina:
Urban renewal project to transform “blighted” neighborhoods into modern housing areas
Affected 4000 people and nearly 1300 households of East Riverside neighborhood called “South Side”
Human Face of Big Data:
Records of Southside property acquisition process:
Each record represents one property’s documents
Each record contains 20 to 200 pages of legal documents
Project has possession of records of 1000 properties
Project’s purpose is to show the property acquisition process
Based on the definition of CAS in the foundational paper, we put forward three heuristic
identify the level of computational thinking
blend theories from several research fields
evaluate CAS related research by positioning them in and around CAS studies
In order to show the validation of the heuristic we chose the case study as our methodology.
Let me introduce the project to you.
The Human Face of Big Data Project focuses on records of urban renewal project, including legal documents of the acquisition process for nearly 1000 properties in Asheville North Carolina.

3. System Prototype
Popup: To see exactly what happened to a parcel with all information.
Search Function: To search for a name and/or a parcel street name.
To make data more accessible and add value to archival materials . We created user personas and scenarios for identifying key stakeholder. We also extracted human stories from the legal documents by data modeling.
In addition, we also designed a relational database with event-based data model by PostgreSQL.
Statistical Results: To see trends of activities.
Color Coding:To see how the entire city was renewed during the project period.

4. Heuristic Analysis
Is the Human Face of Big Data Project on the CAS spectrum?
Does it employ computational thinking processes?
Yes - uses software development practices, data visualization, data management and event-based modelling and HCI models
Does it blend theories from separate fields?
Yes - combines archival concepts with system design and agile development to create a new body of knowledge
3. How can the project be positioned within the realm of CAS themes?
System design and VSD are more about humanizing and specializing archival systems rather than generalizing.
The features make system design and VSD unique CAS themes.
We ask the question: Is the Human Face of Big Data Project on the CAS spectrum?
We think it is. Here are three reasons.
We used several kinds of computational thinking which have been list above
We combined computational thinking and archival concepts with system design which creates new knowledge.
We think that these features make system design and VSD as two unique CAS themes.
