Petroleum Chemistry
2
Composition of crude oil
The hydrocarbons in crude oil are mostly alkanes, cycloalkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons while the other organic compounds contain nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur, and trace amounts of metals such as iron, nickel, copper and vanadium.
3
Hydrocarbon composition of crude oil Four different types of hydrocarbon molecules appear in crude oil. The relative percentage of each varies from oil to oil, determining the properties of each oil.
4
Chemical composition of crude oil: 1-Pure components (hydrocarbon compounds):
Hydrocarbons constitute the essential components of petroleum; their molecules contain only carbon & hydrogen. The carbon-carbon molecule chains can be divided as follows: • Either linked by a single bond ( given the suffix ”-ane”).
5
• Or linked by multiple bonds, that are said to be unsaturated
• Or linked by multiple bonds, that are said to be unsaturated. Double, ( Suffix” –ene”) Or Triple, ( Suffix” –yne”)

1.1. Saturated Aliphatic Hydrocarbons A-Alkanes (Paraffin's): Normal alkanes (n-paraffins: are straight-chain hydrocarbons having no branches) are saturated hydrocarbons having the general formula CnH2n+2. Methane, ethane, propane, and butane are gaseous hydrocarbons.
