1
Barriers to Pervasive Computing
Anupam Joshi CSEE Department, UMBC
2
Hype vs Reality In the early 90s, Sony came out with ??? Since then, “pervasive”/ ubiquitous/ mobile/ whatchamacallit computing has promised more than it can deliver, thus delaying adoption
3
UI Issues “good” interaction paradigms not available
Voice interfaces ? Enhanced reality ?
4
WAN problems Still don’t have a high speed WAN that is “pervasive”. Phone-line+Modem speeds are comparable or better, and are much more “pervasive”
5
Data Management Obvious problems have been solved
e.g. Multimedia transcoding, some content aggregation Questions about scalability remain, especially with “indiscriminate” use of proxies or mobile agents
6
More Data Management Hard questions remain
Transactional data access, although initial work has been / is being done Workflow “Intelligent” offline content aggregation Handling mobility, not just wireless access State maintenance and transportation
7
Applications Essentially creating wireless “clones” of wired applications Little serious thought, except recently, to applications that are “native” to mobile scenario The value add proposition Ad-hoc systems, vicinity based information etc.
