1 1-4 through 1-6 Review For Checkpoint Quiz 2

2 1-4 Dividing Decimals 2.064 ÷ 0.24 Step 1- Move the decimal in the divisor Step 2- Move the decimal in the dividend Step 3- How many times can 24 go into 2? Into 20? Into 26? Step 4- Put the number of times up above and subtract the total. Step 5- Repeat until you reach 0!

3 Annexing Zeroes to Divide
48.0 ÷ 6.8

4 Dividing in Word Problems
A car travels $ miles. It uses gallons of gas. How many miles per gallon of gas does the car travel?

5 1-5 Measuring in Metric Units

6 Metric Units Type Unit Reference Example Length Millimeter (mm)
Centimeter (cm) Meter (m) Kilometer (km) About the thickness of a dime About the width of your little finger About the distance from a doorknob to the floor About the length of 11 football fields Capacity Milliliter (mL) Liter (L) A small spoon holds about 5 mL A little more than 1 quart Mass Milligram (mg) Gram (g) Kilogram (kg) About the mass of a mosquito About the mass of a paper clip About the mass of a bunch of bananas

7 Choose a reasonable estimate and explain your choice.
Capacity/Volume of a small bottle: 250 mL 250 L 250 kL Mass of a Butterfly: 500 mg 500 g 500 kg Height of a student. 150 mm 150 cm 150 m

8 Metric Relationships Unit Kilo-meter Hecto-meter Deca-meter meter
Deci-meter Centi-meter Milli-meter Symbol km hm dam m dm cm mm Value 1,000m 100m 10m 1m 0.1m 0.01m 0.001 m Unit Kilo-gram gram Milli-gram Symbol kg g mg Value 1,000g 1g 0.001 g Unit liter Milli-liter Symbol L mL Value 1L 0.001 L

9 Step 1 Decide if the conversion you are trying to do is going from a larger unit to a smaller unit or from a small unit to a larger unit. mL to L km to m cm to m

10 Step 2 Decide how many of the missing unit fits into the known unit.
245 mL = _____ L 1 mL = L Hint: If you are going from big to small, your missing unit value should be a WHOLE number. If you are going from small to big, your missing unit value should be a DECIMAL. mL is smaller than L Small to Big  We use a decimal.

11 Step 3 Once you decide your relationship, multiply by the missing value. 245 x = L

12 Put it all together! Change 245 milliliters to liters.
245 mL = ____L 1 mL = L 245 x = 0.245 Check for Reasonableness: A milliliter is less than a liter. So, the number of liters should be less than the number of milliliters < 245, so the answer is reasonable.

13 Don’t forget! We can also convert other measurements besides the biggest or smallest and the base unit! How can we do that?

14 Think. Pair. Share! What is the base unit of length?
What unit of mass would you use to measure a body? (mg, g, kg) What number makes each statement true? 64 g = ____ kg ____L = 302 mL 89 km = ____ m The tallest man in the world was 272 cm tall. Find his height in meters.

15 1-6 Comparing and Ordering Integers
You’ll Learn: To compare and order integers and to find absolute values.

16 New Vocabulary Integers- Opposites- Absolute Value-
The set of positive whole numbers, their opposites, and zero. Opposites- Two numbers that are the same distance from 0 on a number line, but in opposite directions. Absolute Value- A number’s distance from 0 on a number line.

17 Finding an Opposite Find the opposite of 6.
The opposite of 6 is -6 because both are twelve units from 0, but in opposite directions.

18 Finding Absolute Value
A number’s distance from 0 on a number line. The absolute value of -3 is written as I-3I = 3

19 Comparing Integers You can compare and order integers by graphing on a number line. Tip: Of two integers on a number line, the one farther to the right is greater!
