As a group, on your Show Me Board, write down any rules for direct speech that you can remember. Struggling? Perhaps this will help you...

The Rules of Direct Speech
Use speech marks around the words that are spoken out loud: “How are you feeling today?” asked James. Start a new line for each new speaker: “I’m fine thanks. What about you?” replied Fran. “Feeling much better after a good night’s sleep.” The first word of the speech must have a capital letter: “Did you see that programme on TV last night?” You must use a punctuation mark to separate the spoken and unspoken words: “My mum said I couldn’t stay up to watch the rest of the game last night,” complained Gary. The punctuation marks should go inside the speech marks: “I don’t believe it!”
