ALBERTA’S OILSANDS (P. 1) Alberta’s oilsands are believed to contain more than 1.6 trillion barrels of bitumen. (Note: Trillion means one million million. One trillion is written as the numeral“1 followed by 12 zeroes.) That’s an incredible amount of bitumen. An estimated 175 billion barrels of oil are recoverable through current technology. Alberta has the second largest proven oil reserves in the world, next to Saudi Arabia. When we get all our bitumen upgraders going, I suspect the U.S. won’t have to rely on Saudi Arabia any longer. More and more people are coming to see for themselves what our amazing oil reserves are all about. U.S. Vice-President Cheney visited Alberta’s oilsands projects awhile back.

The U.S. Is Poised to Hit a New Oil Gusher “A new black gold rush is under way, this time in North Dakota. The potential payoff is huge -- up to 100 billion barrels of oil. That’s twice the size of Alaska’s reserves and potentially enough to meet all U.S. oil needs for two decades. Until now, the obstacles to production seemed overwhelming. The crude oil is locked away in rocks that are buried miles underground in the Bakken Play, a field that stretches into Montana and Saskatchewan, Canada…” The Kiplinger Letter, March 17, 2008

21 Reliable Utility scale, mainstream part of portfolio
Estimated wind capacity by state, Scenario of wind supplying 20% of U.S. electricity Reliable Utility scale, mainstream part of portfolio Requires no storage Supports grid reliability The 20 percent wind energy vision includes: Wide participation of many states, with 42 states expected to host more than 100 MW of wind capacity. Approximately 3 million full-time jobs during operation and another million during construction periods. Sophisticated and thorough environmental and wildlife impact assessments and mitigation based on significant new research and information and coordinated ecosystem planning and management. Coordinated regional planning for new generation and transmission development. Significant involvement of farmers and ranchers who either receive lease payments or ownership rights from wind projects on their land. A domestic manufacturing base, built through stable growth and steady investment in human and physical capital. Active “community wind” (local ownership of large turbines) and “small wind” (on-site small turbines) sectors along with large utility scale projects. Some offshore wind by 2020, with increasing amounts thereafter. hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

22 The Corridors Ports to Plains Wind

23 Criteria include fuel diversity and energy security
EPAct 2005 Section 1221 and 368 Criteria include fuel diversity and energy security Congestion study required but not necessary for designation FERC has backstop siting authority on corridors designated by DOE Large regional electric power markets where variable resources such as wind can sell energy when they are producing. Since variability of load and generation is smoothed out when aggregated over wide areas, large regional systems allow system operators to more reliably balance load and generation and to incorporate significant amounts of variable resources such as wind energy. Flexible demand and supply resources on the power system to provide more tools for operators to balance load and generation and accommodate high wind penetration. Flexible generators such as natural gas-fired units are generally much more economical than energy storage devices for system balancing. Construction of new transmission lines, which will be needed under any new generation fuel-type scenario. As with coal and natural gas, many good wind resources are located in areas remote from electric load, and wind power economics will justify transmission investment.

OUR ASSETS Three Congressionally-designated, north-south High Priority Corridors, comprising 2333 miles of highway, 14% of total U.S. GDP ($1.7 trillion), and 38.5 million citizens. A major U.S. trading region generating $166.7 billion in trade with Canada and Mexico, nearly 20% of total U.S.-NAFTA trade. A powerful and effective U.S. Congressional Caucus; together, we have secured over $270 million to develop, build and improve the Corridor in all 9 Coalition states.

25 Serving the Great Plains
OUR ASSETS 6 major cross-border ports to Canada & Mexico, including NAFTA’s #2 and #15 busiest crossings (Laredo-Nuevo Laredo & Sweetgrass-Coutts). 7 of the top 10 U.S. states for installed and potential wind energy, generating over 5185MW, nearly 45% of the U.S. total. North America’s agricultural heartland, producing $44.3 billion of agricultural goods, or 22.1% of the U.S. total; 6 of the top 10 farm states. Nearly 25% of U.S. ethanol refining capacity, with 33 existing refineries and more underway.
