3 Marrakech partnership on Global Climate Action
Presentation title Marrakech partnership on Global Climate Action Purpose: Catalyze climate action by non-party stakeholders and bring them closer to the UNFCCC process so as to enable increased ambition and collaboration High-level champions for Global Climate Action to guide GCA: In 2018: Minister Inia Seruriatu (Fiji) and Special Envoy Tomasz Chruszczow (Poland). Supported by leadership network, Community of practitioners, collaboration forum, UNFCCC secretariat… Focus on action in seven thematic areas: Energy, Transport, Industry, Human Settlements, Land use, Oceans, Water

4 Thematic areas: Why & What
Presentation title Thematic areas: Why & What Land use: Agriculture & forestry / deforestation: 20-25% of global GHG emissions – direct impact on food production. Oceans & coastal zones: Absorbs 28% of GHG emissions and 90% of heat. Results in acidification, deoxygenation and heating Water: Fresh water systems extremely vulnerable. Fundamental for ability to mitigate and adapt. Human settlements: 70% of energy use and 37-49% of GHG emissions. Significant emission reduction potential. Transport: Mobility projected to increase. Account for approximately 20% of GHG emissions. Energy: Fundamental service for human society. More than 50% of direct GHG emissions. Decarbonization + universal access. Industry: key driver for economic activity. About 20% of GHG emissions. Also highly vulnerable to climate change. Rationale for thematic areas Major emissions Major sinks Key sectors for measures Essential and vulnerable systems for the planet

5 Presentation title GCA at COP23 Major part of conference: 100+ events in 8 thematic days and three high level days on SDG 2 and 11, finance, innovation and resilience. Release of first Yearbook of Global Climate Action Clear positive trend on involvement, ambition, sector and geographic distribution. Short – medium – long term recommendations: Integration – finance – capacity Building momentum towards impacting policy making

6 What’s next? Talanoa Dialogue (2018): Where are we?
