Can include information on population, elevation, resources, etc. They show you how to get places you want to go. To present information concisely (in a small note area like a piece of paper so we can analyze it)

Every map should have a compass rose This shows North, East, South, West A popular rhyme to remember is “Never Eat Shredded Wheat” or “Never Eat Soggy Waffles”

Symbols Represent actual locations on a map
They can be highways, gas stations, hotels, rivers, hospitals, etc. Symbols are a code instead of text Consider shape, size, pattern, color Placed in a key called a map legend
