Proper Grip in Throwing Profile
Note: Griping ball in throwing profile Grip w/finger tips Grip back Qtr. Of ball. (Players can use 1-4 or a 2-5 grip.) A pencil should be able slip in between the hand and ball Avoid palm touching the ball. This prevents friction and allows for perfect spiral #1
4
Proper Throwing Motion
Note: Just prior to throwing, the right shoulder should be cocked back, but the ball should dip only slightly as it is drawn back. Avoid the bad habit of "winding up" by swinging the ball down to waist level before deciding to throw. This tips of the quarterbacks intentions when throwing and it also takes much longer to deliver the ball. While delivering the ball, exaggerate throwing the elbow out in front of the body so that the point of the ball will stay up. This will enable the ball to carry further and makes for a softer pass to catch. The quarterback should use a considerable amount of wrist snap by drawing the fingers and the hand inward and downward or even slightly to the outside. It is this snap that provides the spiral necessary in a well thrown pass. #2

Pocket Awareness Drill
Explanation: Working the sprint out pass in drill. Drill: 328/317 Pass Drill Pre-snap, the coach tells the CB and LB their responsibilities. CB cover WB; LB blitz = FB open LB cover WB; CB blitz = WB open CB cover WB; LB cover FB = run the ball End: Offense, Bag holder to back of offensive line. DB LB Q P F w S H “Decision Cone” Coach #21

Houston Drill Explanation: The Houston drill is designed to help quarterbacks develop great feet, the ability to move around pressure quickly, maintaining readiness to make a throw. Drill: Houston Drill We set up 4 agile bags in a row about a yard apart. The QB begins in a throwing position in front of the first agile bag. He will then sprint through the bags and set up in a throwing position on the other side, and with his eyes still down field, he will work with his back foot through the bags as quickly as possible. When he sets up at the end of the bags he should be under control and balanced in his punch stance. Once he sets up quickly into his punch stance he will then make an accurate throw to his target. #22
25
Figure 8 Drill Explanation: The quarterback develops the feel of knowing where his feet are without using his eyes while keeping the punch stance as he works around obstacles. Drill: Figure 8 QB Drill This drill requires 2 cones lined up as shown in the illustration below. The QB starts from the outside of the cones, working his way around the cones to make the figure 8 before coming back to the his starting point. While the QB is sliding around the cones in a throwing position and using his back foot to get around, he must remain to make a throw to his target. QB Start QB Start #23

Live Pocket Drill Explanation: The purpose of this drill is to improve movement within the pocket while staying poised to throw accurately. Drill: Live pocket drill Step up and throw or step up and go! Rusher comes on command of the coach. Use escape moves to adjust as needed. Coach #24
27
Eye Manipulation Drill
Explanation: With this drill we want to simulate timing, (Pace) rhythm, arc and manipulation of defenders Drill: Eye manipulation Drill In this drill, four quarterbacks will stand 22 yards apart from each other, with two on each side. One QB will stand in front of another to simulate a linebacker. The opposite QB will take a 3 or a 5 step drop with a hitch and try to skim the ball over LB’s head. This throw will have a little height and a lot of speed. The ball needs to come out off the first hitch and the QB should work on looking off the safety. Coach #25
28
Decision Time Drill Explanation: To develop the QB’s quick release upon defensive movement. Drill: Decision Time Drill Align 2receivers 15 yards away facing the QB. Align two defenders, 10 yds. downfield in the middle between 2 receivers, one behind the other. The front defender breaks either direction laterally when the QB’s front foot touches the line. The 2nd defender keys the back of the front defender, then reacts by moving the opposite direction. The QB releases the football opposite the front defenders lateral movement to a stationary receiver (Ex. if the front defender moves to the QB’s right, he throws left.)
