1 SPATIALLY ENABLED DISASTER RISK ENGINEERS
XXIV Skup TRENDOVI RAZVOJA: “DIGITALIZACIJA VISOKOG OBRAZOVANJA ”, Kopaonik, SPATIALLY ENABLED DISASTER RISK ENGINEERS Authors: Senka Bajić , PhD student, Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad Jovana Bondžić, Teachning Assistant, Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad Srđan Popov, Associate Professor, Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad

2 1. INTRODUCTION Experts in Disaster Risk Management field should be equipped with contemporary information technology knowledge and, on the other hand, with comprehensive understanding of natural phenomena.

3 Providing information in the time when it is needed, and in the form in accordance the purpose it will be used for, are the key tasks that disaster risk engineer dealing with during the limited period for reaction and response to upcoming event. Knowledge about hazard phenomena is essential for reliable data selection for any specific disaster analysis. Therefore, at the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad, at Disaster Risk Management and Fire Safety Engineering (DRM&FSE) study program, during undergraduate and master studies, students are educated in the field of information technologies with the accent on spatial data concept.

4 2. THE ROLE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES IN DRM&FSE
During undergraduate studies, students have an opportunity to become familiar with information technologies by use of several software at three different subjects. During master studies, students are obligated to attend course of Integrated Disaster Risk Management. Subject Fundamentals of Information Technologies Subject Applied Information Technologies

5 Subject Modeling and Simulation in Risk Management - analyse various hazard scenarios by creating models of real system and processes within it ALOHA software - which is used to plan for and respond to chemical emergencies. Input data location, chemical characteristics, atmospheric conditions... Output given in the form of the treat zones represents information about human, environmental and infrastructural exposure to the modeled hazard.

6 In order to visualize that information Quantum GIS software is introduced at the practical exercises. By use of QGIS, students are enabled to interconnect different data formats - observe spatial relations within and beyond identified hazard zone.

7 3. INTEGRATED LAND AND WATER INFORMATION SYSTEM
Master studies are provided with Integrated Disaster Risk Management concept ILWIS software Different features which are included in this software such as visualization and manipulation of raster, vector and tabular data, interactive retrieval of attribute information associated with spatial data implementing/developing algorithms for air/space borne image data processing, GIS analytical tools, 3D analysis...

8 Very important characteristic of ILWIS software is educational platform for teaching GIS and RS.
One of the examples which allows students to develop their skills in disaster risk management, is using ILWIS software for flood hazard analysis, while floods are very existent natural hazard in Serbia.

9 To conclude, different GIS-based disaster decision support methods and open source software such as ILWIS can promote educational programs and studies and can definitely improve integrated management of catastrophic risks in the future.

10 4. CONCLUSION Using of software which are highly available and up to date, in different educational programs is very important. As it for student who are studying Disaster Risk Management and Fire Safety Engineering study program, software which include risk analysis of the events with catastrophic consequences and spatial- temporal distribution of hazards are inevitable in order to manage different natural hazards and risks Hazard mapping is one of the best preventive measures, and one of the best ways to mitigate the risk.

11 THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME 
