Do you know the difference between urban and rural?
Urban means in the city. Rural means in the country.

Why is urbanization happening in Asia?
For thousands of years, people have lived in Asia in poverty working small plots of land growing rice, vegetables ,or raising chickens and pigs. Often their small plots of land can’t supply enough food for their family, let alone making extra money. But in the past twenty years, many Asians from the rural areas have left their simple life of peasant farming, or agriculture, to go to the city. The promise of jobs, education, and better health care attracts thousands of immigrants to the cities each year.

Does everyone benefit from moving to the city?

Does everyone benefit from moving to the city?
Not all people who move to the city are successful. Sometimes immigrants find the cost (rent and food) of living in the city impossible. They can end up homeless or have to live in the slums. Another problem is that some of the people do not have the skills or training for the good jobs and have to accept low paying jobs. With low paying jobs, they live in poor areas or with several families in one very crowded apartment.

The factors that determine why people move and where they go are called…
Push factor is what makes people leave an area. No work, unfertile soil, and war are all reasons why people are pushed out of their homes. When they leave they migrate to a new area. Pull factor is what determines where people will go next. Usually people move to a new area that will benefit them more. Better schools, more jobs, safety, and better housing are all pull factors. Some of you might have been pulled in to Mayfield because of our good school system!

I was thinking… Less food being grown to feed people on earth Cities will become overcrowded Cities will be more polluted More vehicle transportation harming the ozone layer Language and religion differences create conflict What problems will occur in the cities if too many people move there?
