2 Summary After the scramble for Africa, World War II, and many slavery attempts, Africa is now trying to emerge seeking a new future. They are now trying to improve their economies and social welfare.

3 Making Economic Choices
African nations wanted to develop and to do this they had to establish transportation systems, develop resources, increase general knowledge, and solve rural poverty. Socialism and capitalism were economic choices chosen by many African nations.

4 Environmental Threats
Urbanization, farming, and logging have devoured 70 percent of Africa’s animal habitats. Wangari Maathai challenged government policy by starting the Green Belt Movement.

5 Basic Obstacles to Well-Being
Drought Brings Starvation: Long droughts contributed to famine in many parts of Africa in the late 1900’s. AIDS Kills Millions of People: It was estimated that more than two million Africans died of AIDS each year.

6 Current Event: U.S.-Africa Summit
The U.S. and Africa will have a meeting to discuss a new partnership in trade and such. U.S.-Africa relations have gone from slave ship to partnership

7 Current Event: Continued
Already, African and American entrepreneurs are working together to provide electricity to 589 million people in Sub-Saharan African countries. Electrify Africa Act
