British told India they had to come up with a plan for dealing with religious issues
The people of Britain were initially upset about leaving India
Finally agreed it was for the best after understanding the cost of WWII and keeping India
Was the start of letting go of other colonies.

4. What is Partition? Partition= Divide
The Muslim League was the first to introduce the idea.
Divide India by religious areas
Gandhi rejected the idea. He believed the religions could work together.
Two main religions in India are Hindu and Muslim
Partition would be a solution to the British condition of “dealing with the religion problem”

5. Groundwork for Partition
The British created the borders of India and Pakistan
Pakistan would be Muslim
India would be Hindu
Government services would be split up equally
People could choose where they wanted to live.

6. Effects of Partition on the people
People handled it poorly
Religious violence
Refugees swarmed both ways
English did very little to help

7. Millions fled in both directions
Millions fled in both directions. Both sides fought and killed the other. Instead of peace, chaos was made.
Neither side was prepared for the influx of people with no homes. Refugee camps were made.

8. Gandhi assassinated
On January 30th, 1948, a Hindu that was angry over Gandhi’s good treatment of Muslims, Nathuram Godse, shot Gandhi.
Gandhi had just finished a multi-faith prayer.
