Ms. Taylor English Language Arts 7 Expectations Welcome to 7th grade!
Welcome to 7th grade! Dear Parents/Guardians, It is hard to believe school is back in session. I’m excited to meet your child and you. Your student has a lot of exciting things to look forward to this year. I believe by you and I working together your child will have a successful school year. I encourage you to call or me anytime you have a question about your child’s academic progress or classroom behavior. Attached are my standards for behavior in the classroom and a list of classroom supplies needed for my class. I promise to let you know any concerns I may have as well. I consider it an honor and privilege to be your child’s teacher. I look forward to joining forces with you to make this year a great one! There is an absent bin where students can obtain any worksheets. Each student will have two school days to make up work for full credit, and Skyward will classify uncompleted work as a zero until they are made up. Seventh grade ELA Supplies Two comp books (labeled RLA and Writing) paper, pencil/pen, one-inch binder, and notecards Wish list Individually wrapped candy, glue sticks, expo markers, expo board cleaner, cap erasers, paper towels, colored computer paper, pencils, paper, sticky notes, air freshener, Clorox wipes, Kleenex, magic erasers, AAA and AA batteries Come to class on time and be prepared. 7th grade Syllabus 2017-2018 “Survival in the Wild”
TEXTBOOKS: Holt McDougal Literature Grade 7 * Holt McDougal Elements of Language First Course Grade 7 1st 9 weeks “Courage and Perseverance” This nine weeks, students will read an array of informational texts and other pieces of literature which focus on the unit theme. Students will create expository and narrative writings, and be able to identify the difference between phrases, clauses, how to punctuate phrases and clauses, correct spelling and precise language, types of sentences, and dangling/misplaced modifiers. Students will also focus on being able to use context clues to determine meanings of vocabulary words as well as figurative language. Texts: Freedom Walkers by Russell Freedman & The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne 2nd 9 weeks “Characters with Character” This nine weeks, students will read an array of informational texts and other pieces of literature which focus on the unit theme. Students will study argumentative writing techniques, and will create argumentative writing pieces. Students will also focus on correct comma usage, other punctuation rules, learn how to better spell words, and other correct uses of language. Texts: Short Story Unit & A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens 3rd 9 weeks “Survival in the Wild” This nine weeks, students will read an array of informational texts and other pieces of literature which focus on the unit theme. Students will also review all previous informational standards. Students will conduct research and complete a research project. Students will determine meanings of words using context clues, and use precise language as well as figurative language. Text: Poetry Unit The Giver by Lois Lowry 3rd 9 weeks Making Sense of Our World” This nine weeks, students will read an array of informational texts and other pieces of literature which focus on the unit theme. Students will also create narrative writing pieces review all previously taught standards. Text: Oral Traditions Unit & The Outsiders by S.E.
