Debtors could be thrown in jail for not paying off debts
New penitentiaries were built - old prisons were unsafe and dangerous

Seneca Falls Convention (1848):
Declaration of Sentiments - “All men AND women are created equal”
Elizabeth Cady Stanton was only non-Quaker that drafted the Declaration
Sought women’s suffrage
Women would not obtain suffrage until 1920 (19th amendment)
