1 Making use of social tools
Social Media Making use of social tools Introduce myself – Mandi Steward, Public Relations Coordinator with SOMO. Have been here six years. Journalism degree from Mizzou, but I’m old enough that they weren’t teaching this yet! Take a poll – who has an account with (go through list of icons), have them raise their hands.

2 So…you get paid to play on Facebook?
Yes. And…

3 By the numbers In the beginning… Fast forward 17 years:
1 of every 6 minutes online 40% of mobile users browse internet More connected = more generous with time 42% of business will inc. spending Highest bounce rate 96% of year olds on social network Show Today Show video. Give stats. Pretty straight forward, quick slide.

4 Where SOMO Hangs Out 7 years old 800m active users Avg 130 friends

Facebook. The social media giant, where EVERYONE is. Young to old. Youtube. Videos. Amateur and otherwise. Our presence here is currently fairly weak, but we’re getting equipment to start producing our own videos. Twitter. 140 character updates. It’s a status update essentially. Higher income & education levels found here. Wordpress. Blogging. Does anyone follow a blog? It’s like unofficial journalism. Some are good, some are terrible, but everyone is doing it. Including us.  59m Wordpress sites 298m blog readers/month 500,000 new posts/day

5 Other Major Players 120m members Affluent, professional members
Used for professional networking 5.5m photos tagging LinkedIn. Professionals & students. Networking, job referrals and searches. An online resume. Flickr – photo site. Used by many orgs, not us. You can tag photos to sort by category. Google+ - Just opened to the public 9/21. Stats will change significantly overtime. Brand new 26m users 72% male #1 occupation = engineer (29%!)

6 Is this just a fad? What did you find interesting about that video?
If Facebook were a country, it would be the world’s third largest. 50% of mobile internet traffic in UK is Facebook. 100+ hours of video uploaded to YT while we watched that. Wikipedia has been shown to be as accurate as Encyclopedia Britannica.

7 Social Media & You Engage people with a powerful story.
Regular social network users raise up to 40% more. How many of you have heard of the 9 year old girl, Rachel, who was trying to raise $300 for charity:water in celebration of her 9th birthday? She was killed in an auto accident and has since received 31,000 donations totaling more than $1.2m. This is an extreme story, but it was a viral story. It started showing up everywhere, and people were moved to help make her wish come true.

8 Social Media & You You are an extension of your PD / SO chapter
Pay attention to spelling & grammar Add humor Include photos & videos End with call to action What happens in Vegas … Keep in mind everything is public, permanent and shareable Excellent copy builds credibility Humor says you’re friendly Photos and videos leave a lasting impression Call to action – volunteer, register, donate, read this article

9 If you’re in charge Use your logo, colors, etc.
Maintain consistent schedule Respond to comments Don’t remove complaints Only register for as many as you can manage Integrate with offline materials Track your results Create strong brand association Don’t confuse people. We have a calendar to schedule posts months in advance. Comments – build relationships, interact, tag Complaints – responding in public forum builds trust Don’t think you have to register for every site out there. An unused profile is worse than no profile. Offline – business cards, newsletters, brochures. We are just getting into this. Track results – Google Analytics, Hootsuite, Social Oomph, anyone else?

10 Questions? Comments? Download this presentation: Success stories? Horror stories? PowerPoint will be available on Monday.
