Five counties in which main US Rust Belt cities are located: Mahoning County (Youngstown, OH), Allegheny County (Pittsburg, PA), Wayne County (Detroit, MI), Cuyahoga County (Cleveland, OH), and Erie County (Buffalo, NY). The determined cities were based onwhere the auto and steel industry were thriving. This is during the time when suburbanization began to increase around the world. Not only was the city population affected, but the county population was affected as well. The counties were determined by who was affected by the decline in the auto and steel industry and which county have seen the most change in the economy and community. The first method, will compare and contrast the population of the counties. The method will show which county’s population declined drastically when the industry left, which county(s) population increased steadily or shot up, and which county’s population is showing little to no improvement between the year
